I have always loved to dance. At the young age of 7, I was leading dance routines on the lawn with neighbourhood friends, and quickly fell in love with talent shows when I became old enough to audition. My dad saw this passion and enrolled me in Hip Hop classes at age 11 so I could continue to hone my craft and fall in love with the sport even more.
As I got older, I craved variety and branched out into Jazz and Tap, while still continuing my love for Hip Hop Dance. I was transferred from Beginners Tap and Jazz to Intermediate within a week and Tap quickly became my second love to Hip Hop, with the theatrics of Jazz not far behind.
My teaching journey began when I was 17 and approached by our Studio Manager to take over the Monday night Hip Hop classes. I was ecstatic. I began teaching four back to back classes every Monday night, ages 5 to 45. Prepping for Dance Recitals was my favourite time of year and watching my students grow and learn was a priceless experience.
Fast forward seven years and I'm living in Kingston, pursuing my passions for fashion and marketing. A client meeting turns a little more personal and the topic of dance arises, with the need for someone to teach this lady's sweet daughter a few moves or two. A lawyer's office turns into a make-shift dance studio a few nights a week and my first love quickly begins to consume my life again.
With the encouragement of a few friends, I reached out to Life Yoga with the intent of renting space and graduating from the lawyer's office. The result was unexpected, as I ended up auditioning to become a Cardio Dance Fitness Instructor. My audition was (thankfully) well-received; thus began my journey at Life Yoga.
As part of my training, and to get used to the studio space, I frequented Zumba classes and realized the potential there was to grow and learn with this new style of dance. That's when I set out to become Zumba certified in May, 2016 and humbly took over Dawn's place as Life Yoga's Zumba Instructor in July, 2016, when she moved to Halifax.
Although I'm newer to Life Yoga, the studio has already become my second home and the love I feel for this community is boundless. My goal is to give back to the studio and community as much as I have been taken care of and bring the essence of Life Yoga with me everywhere I go. I'm so proud to call myself the Zumba Instructor at Life Yoga and look forward to bringing the joy of dance into those who join my classes.
